It places the player in the role of various Special Forces soldiers conducting covert operations, colloquially known as “black operations,” which governments keep secret. Similar to previous Call of Duty games, players can switch between many characters involved in missions around the world, including Vietnam, Russia, Cuba, and Laos.

Like its predecessors, Black Ops includes online and offline multiplayer support and standard game modes such as Free-for-All, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. Players collect XP points and progress through the leaderboard. World at War, a zombie co-op option from Treyarch’s previous Call of Duty game, allows two players to play together offline and four players online.
Players can earn CoD points, rewarded as XP is gained, with 1 CoD point provided for every 10 XP earned. These points can be used to place bets on memorable “betting matches,” which, if won, award the player additional CoD points and XP.

The game introduces Create-a-Class 2.0, allowing players to further customize their online classes, including identity tags, camouflage patterns, emblems, and gun sight reticules. For the first time in a CoD game, players can control aircraft such as the Hind combat helicopter and the stealth plane SR-71 Blackbird.
