Regularly stories pop up about people who are cursed by other people, events, or objects. The curse of Tutankhamun is a well-known example. But there are also more recent curses, for example, the curse of Ötzi, an ice mummy found in 1991. And what about the petition in the city of Carlisle in 2005, to have a work of art removed that contained the text of a curse?

When suddenly many people die who have opened a grave, touched an object, or attended a certain event, all sorts of rumors about a curse soon spread. Do curses really exist? Judge for yourself.

Below you will find a list of 10 alleged curses about which there has ever been much to do. And not all of them are curses from hundreds of years ago. Even in our modern society, where rationality and common sense reign supreme, many still believe in curses…

1. The Curse of the Basano vase

The Basano’s mysterious silver vase dates from the 15th century. It was a gift for a bride-to-be. However, the bride was brutally murdered on her wedding day. Just before she breathed her last, she swore to avenge herself. The vase subsequently came into the hands of several family members of the murdered bride. Due to some obscure cause, all these family members died suddenly, shortly after they had taken the vase into the house. The family decided to hide the cursed silver vase.

In the 1980s, the vase resurfaced. Reportedly there was a message in it, with the words ‘Beware – this vase brings death’! Once again the Basano vase came into the hands of several owners, all of whom died shortly after the purchase. Museums and collectors did not want to possess the cursed object. The police eventually confiscated the vase and buried it in a lead box, somewhere in a secret place.

The American Kennedy family acquired a place in the history books forever. Father Joseph Kennedy’s family brought forth an American president and several leading politicians. Yet many believe there is a curse on the Kennedy’s.

It began in 1944, when the eldest son in the family, Joseph Junior, was killed during a war mission. In August 1963, President John F. Kennedy’s two-day-old son died. The president himself was murdered on November 22, 1963. Senator Ted Kennedy was seriously injured in a plane crash in 1964. In 1968, a Palestinian immigrant presidential candidate Robert Kennedy was shot. The Kennedy’s suffering was not yet over. A son of Robert, Michael LeMoyne Kennedy, was killed in a skiing accident in 1997. The eldest son of the late President John F. Kennedy and his wife and sister-in-law died in 1999 when his plane crashed in the Atlantic Ocean.
